I'm very happy with The Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. I bought it from Enderly Books, which sent it quickly, in excellent condition, in the slipcase and with a magnifying glass, which readers will almost certainly need. In this edition,four pages from the original work are "reproduced micrographically" to fit on a single page.The publication history of the OED is complicated, and prospective buyers may find it useful to know a little about it before making their purchase. The main body of this edition of the OED was completed in 1928, while the Preface to this edition (with the Supplement) is dated 1933. Thus, a word such as "automobile" is found in the Supplement, not the main part of the dictionary. If you're looking for an up-to-date reference, you've come to the wrong place. Get the latest edition (for much more money). Although a publication date of 1971 is listed on the title page of this edition, this refers to the date of the original "micrographic" reproduction, not an updating of the OED at that time.The OED is a dictionary like no other, and I'm looking forward to dipping into it for many years to come.
Simply too much fun. It has become my go-to dictionary. The magnifier is essential. TRICK- take an iPad photo of the definition you want, then zoom in on what you want to read. It makes it highly visible and easy to read. The same "trick" works great with maps. I work from zooming in on the iPad photo of the map area I want, and navigate from the iPad. It makes tiny map entries and roads easy to see and follow. See it once and you won't go back. It works way better than a magnifying glass. The stuff that is left out of the physically smaller and shorter, less-inclusive editions of the OED seem to leave out all the fun stuff, like historical literate varied quotations using the word to illustrate how different authors have used the word. Big, heavy, tiny print, expensive, and worth all of that for the content.

Got this as a gift for an English student and she loved it. Fits well in a small room where you don't have a giant library (or wallet) for the actual set.
English intellectuals have no sense of practical use; this is one difficult reference to use. Admittedly, it's got every word ever used in English since Chaucer, but it's ghastly to use. Be warned.The origin of the word and especially the pronunciation are excruciatingly difficult to figure out.Incidentally, I bought a used set, and it came without a hand lens. Harbor Freight (if you have one near you) sells a decent replacement for the Bausch and Lombe lens for $2.
I am an English composition major and therefore have a certain level of love for English dictionaries. There is no better dictionary than the Oxford English Dictionary which compiles a comprehensive list of words from every English speaking country in the world. This dictionary also includes a detailed etymology of words, which includes both the evolving meaning of the word and examples of works from the time period referenced. The full version of the OED is around 20 volumes long and costs around $1,500-$2,000. This compact edition is two volumes with four micrographed pages from the original on each page. The words are obviously very small but legible. Most also include a magnifying glass. For someone who wants this dictionary for its function, rather than just to take up space on a book shelf, the compact version is an amazing compromise. I paid around $80 after shipping for mine, which is in a well used condition, but I have used it so many times since purchasing it. I love it.
The idea of the average reader or student being able to have one of these at his fingertips at home or in a dorm for the price of a used textbook is absolutely astonishing. Viva Amazon!
