As a parent advocate with personal experience getting stuck in a case that didn’t belong in juvenile court, I have long wondered how the juvenile justice system could be so unjust. “They Took the Kids Last Night” offers so many important lessons. The stories highlighted in this book make it easy to see how the juvenile courts so quickly assume parents are guilty until proven innocent—so contrary to the most sacred principle in the justice system, innocent until proven guilty. Every juvenile court judge, state’s attorney, guardian ad litem, CASA volunteer, and child welfare case manager should read this book to help them understand how critical it is to get it right and how important it is to keep children united with their families. This book highlights the need for accessible, affordable parent representation in juvenile courts, especially for minorities and people without reasonable financial means. Perhaps the sequel to this book should tell the story of how the juvenile court players so easily move on to the next case while the parents struggle to emerge from the sea of oppression; how healing gets delayed; and how future life experiences trigger the trauma and fear of their ordeal so unexpectedly. The author, a family defense attorney, offers a compelling view of the many fallacies of the child welfare system. Remove children first; ask questions later. She shows how faulty science, lack of communication, and a child welfare agency often eager to "win" at all cost act to endanger families and children by aggressive, heavy handed intervention into family's lives.
