I found this work to be very disappointing and would not recommend it to anyone. While I never expected to find an in-depth treatment on this subject in a relatively short book I found that this book contained more of the author's opinions than actual history. This aspect was so distasteful to me that I couldn't even finish the book. The author's view seems to be very "chrono-centric" and projects modern cultural values on early 1800's culture. In my opinion that's a huge mistake and leads to an improper historical accounting. While "writer bias" is normal and expected something like this work should not be labeled "history." Being of Native American descent I can certainly sympathize with their view. The Trail of Tears, along with other actions taken against Native Americans throughout our history are certainly "dark spots." However the "Native American good/European-descent person bad" position taken by the author is far too simplistic and doesn't reflect the reality of the times. The bright spot in it all is that I only paid $2.99 for the Kindle edition. :-)
I want to start off by saying that I am descended from the Eastern Band of Cherokee. My family hid and escaped from the military who sought to move us from our land.This is an excellent brief history with some serious truths for readers. If you don't know anything about some of the founding fathers and what America was founded on, this is a great place to start. I really appreciate the author's point of view and how they bring into focus the good and bad, from different perspectives. Definitely read.
This is a very interesting piece of history. It discusses the hardships the Native Americans suffered while being moved from their homes in different states to Oklahoma. Some of the Cherokee dropped off in Missouri, since it was in the dead of winter, and so many were sick and dying. My great-great grandparents were on the Trail of Tears. They were both Cherokee. However, there were up to 4 different tribes that were in this march. This piece of history is very important for people to learn. I highly recommend it.
This was a very disgraceful part of American history. This is likely the most information that I have read about the Trail of Tears. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about the Trail of Tears.
This is a good history lesson about the colonists, the early Americans and the Indians living on American soil. The Indian Removal Act was in 1830 when Andrew Jackson our sixth President. The Act let the government remove the nativesfrom their home.This turned out to be a dark and cruel time in our history. The Cherokee, Muskogee-Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians were removed from their homes due to greed for their land and gold on their land. The natives walked hundreds of miles in freezing rain and snow in the winter enduring pain, suffering, lack of food and no place to sleep. There were thousands of natives that lose their lives on the Trail of Tears.I learned so much history from this fact based book which was filled with true events and stories of early development of America. I recommend this book to everyone, a great history book.
As a reader of many works of history, I would not recommend this book or any of the others in the series. Although there is a bibliography, there are no footnotes. The book comes across as more opinion than documented fact. The real horrors of the Native Americans were worse than portrayed.I have a very great interest in and an even greater respect for Native Americans. They deserve a better telling of their history. This country still owes Native Americans a debt it can never repay.The book previews made things even worse. The South, as the Native Americans, only wanted to be left alone. Both were the victims of greed and both suffered at the hands of a corrupt government.
this is part of my heritage because some of my family ancestors was part of this movement and some of them stay in on the Reservation in Tennessee/North Carolina. I am happy to see that someone is putting out there the true story about what happen in this country instead of hiding it under the rug so to speak with the new so called education system that are not teaching today.
A well written account of the shameful treatment of the native American populations of the original colonies. Particularly highlighting the blatant failure of the American Government to live up to its promises and the total disregard of the well being of the indigenous Americans.Shame on us
