Diane Burnside Murdock's The New Art of Dying is a well thought-out book written with an objective but compassionate voice. She writes it as a guide that any mature person at any age can use, and emphasizes her stance with a firm logic that encourages reflection and sparks points of discussion with loved ones. This would have been an invaluable book to me had I received it before my father's passing - reading it now gives me new insights on what my family went through during those final days.The book is divided into a series of questions to prompt the reader on the subject of ailing and dying: 'Who Are You?', which further subdivides into a discussion on how we die and how our experiences, ethnicity, culture, and belief system influences our final days; 'What are Your Choices?', which discusses medical, palliative, and legal options; and 'What are the Problems?', which divides problems to internal ones you can control and external ones not in your control that you can at least prepare for. After laying out these pertinent questions, the author shares stories of other people and families who experienced the passing of someone they loved.I highlighted many passages throughout the book. Some are facts: definition of terms, lists, and processes. Others are just excerpts that speak to me, recommendations that I wish I knew when my father's health was deteriorating, or observations about the modern health industry that I did not realize. The author's tone encourages that kind of engaged focus - the facts are couched in observations or implications that sound relevant to me, and so I keep reading to understand more. I felt like I was in a conversation with the author, not in a lecture taking notes, and the information I was gaining sounds both current yet still in flux. The author is fair and clear about explaining what are gray areas and encourages research or action to bring more clarity to them, making me feel empowered to resolve the issues that haven't been ironed out. It makes the guide feel dynamic and inclusive of my situation and my concerns, and it inspires me to take actions along the lines the author recommends.I don't think one has to have already lost a loved one before the book becomes an important read. The tone is collaborative, the case it lays out intelligent, and the recommendations are relevant and actionable. Despite the possibly uncomfortable topic, The New Art of Dying is worth reading. Highly recommended.
