A 100 cupboards in a wall in the upstairs attic are promising to be dangerous – but definitely exciting – with adventures around every cupboard! N.D. Wilson has imagined an engaging story of curious cupboards hidden behind a wall. As he unravels the mystery in this must-read series he weaves in a story of redemption together with monsters, witches, and wizards. This three book series, 100 Cupboards, Dandelion Fire, and The Chestnut King, will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!As a 12-year-old boy, Henry York, who is staying with his uncle and aunt, discovers the cupboards in his uncle’s attic with his cousin Henrietta and friends (like Zeke, Penelope, and Anastasia). It all starts when Henry hears alarming noises in his wall and begins cutting away the plaster to seek what is beyond. Finding the cupboards, he endeavors to enter the portal into a new world. They meet dangerous witches and mystical wizards, but most importantly they learn the meaning of friendship and redemption. The children also learn some surprising facts about their family that they never knew!As these cupboards and their secrets are unlocked, N.D. Wilson keeps his readers glued to the book – I couldn’t put it down! The 100 Cupboards novel is bursting with wonder and excitement as young Henry unlocks the secrets of ages past. As a 12-year-old myself, this story helps me to learn the importance of courage, perseverance, and friendship. As I learn of these deeds, I also enjoy the fantastic tale of the 100 cupboards!I advise anyone that does not have a good summer book to read 100 Cupboards! I love to read these books over and over again, and I hope you will too! Now stop reading this, and go unlock the cupboards!

My kids and I attempted to read aloud this book after high recommendations from the Read Aloud Revival podcast. Storyline seemed to fit the fantasy realm my family enjoys, so we were ready to go to like this series. But, we could only make it through Chapter 10 before I just had to put it down from boredom. I’m sorry, I am writing this review without finishing the book. Wish we could love this book, but the story didn’t flow well, getting us caught up in small details that don’t move the story forward at all. Some parts were just confusing.... or dull. Whole chapters, nothing would happen until the end, just pointless conversations between dull characters. Reading it out loud became a chore, so, we stopped. We’ve read so many good books out loud.... The Chronicle Series, Lewis Carol, Charles Dickens, D’Aulaire Mythology books, Tom Sawyer, Robert Lawson..that this one just didn’t pass the test. However, I told my boys that if they wanted to give it a go on their own silently, they could, but so far no one has tried. Too bad

I had a copy of the prequel to this book (THE DOOR BEFORE). I was going to give it to my 9 year old granddaughter. I decided to read part of it to see if it was age appropriate. I LOVED IT! So I ordered the 100 Cupboards and loved it also. Read both books before giving to my granddaughter. Now I am reading the second, Dandelion Fire. Can't wait for my granddaughter to read the series and I hope she likes them as much as I did.

Great read, very interesting story & characters. Reminded me a bit of Narnia set in Kansas. Looking forward to the next book in the series and for my 12yo daughter to finish Michael Vey so she can read this series with us. This is the second series I've read by N. D. Wilson and I am impressed by his storytelling and depth of characters.

Full of suspense and wonderful characters. Fun, funny, gripping, and mysterious. The writing is wonderful!

On the whole, this wasn't a terrible book. I was invested enough to keep reading, and interested enough to read the sequels. That said ...I liked the description of Henry, Kansas (the multiple uses of the name 'Henry' did get old pretty quick) in the beginning, but the story could just as easily have taken place in the middle of Florida or Vermont for all the influence the location had on the plot. The first part of the book was slow, which is unfortunate because the last few chapters had a ton of stuff crammed into them and i didn't feel like i fully understood what was going on. I really don't get why it took more than half the book to get to the traveling to other worlds promised on the back description -- imagine if the Pevensies didn't get to Narnia until 2/3rds of the way through The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe!Speaking of traveling to other worlds, there's not really a whole lot of that going on here. Having read the entire trilogy by now, i can confidently say the title 100 Cupboards is misleading. Based on the number of cupboards visited and explored in the whole series, it should have been called something like 3 Cupboards. The characters were moderately interesting, but none were particularly relatable. Henry comes off as super blasé about his parents a) having been kidnapped and b) (spoiler warning) not actually being his parents (end spoiler), Henrietta displays a lack of common sense without any accompanying character traits to explain it, the villain was creepy but i don't know who she was or what she wanted, and the near-end reactions of Penelope and Anastasia both struck me as out of place.I went on to read the sequels, but i kind of wish i hadn't bothered. They turned out to have the exact same problems: murky plots, an excess of uninteresting characters in poorly-explored places with unexplained magic.

I cannot say enough about N.D. Wilson's juvenile literature. Except perhaps that it is more creative and literate than most contemporary juvenile literature. He does not "write down" to his audience but engages their imaginations with his precise imagery. The plot is fascinating. The characters are engaging. My granddaughter and I could not wait to read the entire series and were sad when it was over. Fortunately Wilson also wrote Leepike Ridge and The Ashtown Burials series!

Not my usual genre, but l founf the story unique and interesting. It's an easy and quick read, fun, but somewhat predictable. I enjoyed it, and will read the rest of the series.
