Dr Swindoll takes the reader through the Bible looking at God’s grace.Overall I was rejoicing as I read this book. That God would love this sinner is amazing to me (1 Timothy 1:15). I rejoice each time I hear of the grace of our loving and gracious God.
I knew about God's grace in my head from the first time I came to trust Him, but it was this book that moved it into my heart in a new way. It just clicked for me. It's nothing new, just basic Christianity, explaining that we didn't have to earn God's pleasure, He graciously gave it through Christ. We merely accept and trust Him. The book moved into new territory for me by realizing that saving me by grace was just the beginning. Now He walks with me in grace, healing and building me up, still with nothing I need to or could earn. He just loves me and has already moved me into this new life eternal, in relationship with Him.I can't promise this book will be the life changer it was for me, but it will show you the same amazing grace of God that it showed me.Enjoy.
Revolutionary!! I have read this over the years. I have given this book to people who have faced abuse from sinful people who attend church. I have seen the Lord use this book many times to bring healing in the hearts of people.It should be titled, "From Legalism to Grace" :-)
Freedom in Christ is the only true freedom there is. Many search for it in fleshly realms or think if they could just be perfect they would be deserving. Neither of those leads to freedom, but disappointment and many brick walls. This book leads you down the path and places mirrors along the way for you to examine Gods grace for you and your grace for others. Did this book one chapter at a time with my best friend who moved states away and we grew together as the Lord revealed His grace through the pages.
I have always loved Chuck's teaching - I find him approachable yet theologically sound and this book is my new favorite of his. He compels the reader towards a new way of looking at grace;both by the gift that it is and by the "offensiveness" of it. I loved this book and his careful examination of the topic, as well as the human soul's thirst for God's mercy.
First, I could mention that my normal reading is along the lines of R.C. Sproul, Francis Schaeffer, John Piper, etc. So I'm used to pretty dense, challenging, "meaty" content. So with that qualification I suppose it should come as no surprise that I found Swindoll's light, vernacular style frustrating. Like others who have reviewed this book, the lack of depth, practical guidance, and clear scripture exposition was annoying. In general, this book reads more like a "Daily Bread" devotional than a treatise on grace from a multi-credentialed pastor and former university chancellor.That said, the content here is good especially for those who skew toward legalism and a lack of compassion due to temperament or bad teaching from well meaning but misguided Christian leaders. I'm going to recommend this book to new Christians trying to understand the biblical doctrine of grace and old Christians who prefer lighter fare who have fallen into legalism. However, for anyone looking for a deeper, meater, more fully rounded treatise on the subject I'm going to refer them to R.C. Sproul's Grace Grace Unknown: The Heart of Reformed Theology or John Piper's Future Grace, Revised Edition: The Purifying Power of the Promises of God on the subject instead.Bottom line: If you're looking for depth, look elsewhere. If you're looking for poignant stories, anecdotes, and a good conceptual overview of the biblical doctrine of grace you've found your book.3.5 Stars
This book deserves 5 stars because of the beautiful message of our freedom through the unselfish gift given to us by God when His Son, Jesus, died on the cross for our sins. Grace is given to us, not because we deserve it but because of Christ Jesus' love for all of God's children. At the end of 2012, GRACE was the word I chose for my journey through this year. In January, Chuck began an 18-week radio broadcast of this book. I downloaded all the broadcasts from his website Insight for Living. They are based on the book. With the broadcasts to listen to & the book to re-read, I will learn to walk in 'freedom' throughout the rest of my life. I pray that you will accept Jesus into your life & experience the freedom of GRACE. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
This book gets straight to the heart of the matter as to why I struggle as a Christian. Selfish pride, legalistic attitudes, being a people pleaser, among many wrongful attitudes I have. Unwilling to accept or give Grace in my personal relationships, my marriage is crumbling. This book made me realize the importance of Grace in our lives. Truly a new revelation for me when I needed it most. Please read!
