Cooper does a wonderful service to the church by explaining the various elements of the liturgy in a clear and helpful way. For those coming into a liturgical tradition from broad evangelicalism this is a much needed roadmap. For those who grew up in a church with a classic liturgy, but never reflected deeply or seriously on the meaning of the service or the reasons behind it, this will be an epiphany. The fourteen chapters are brief, the prose accessible, and the theology sound. Many of the other explanations of the liturgy suffer from archaic language and dated references. Cooper would be my "go to" book to recommend to lay people regarding the liturgy.
This explanation of the Lutheran liturgy has several unique features. First, not only is an element of the liturgy - its rationale and practice - explained, but also its historical origin and its place, or absence, in other theologies (termed "traditions" by the author) laid out. This is typically followed by a case for the orthodox use, respectfully but also, when needed, uncompromisingly made. No doubt the basis for this approach is the fact that the author is of Reformed origin and therefore has a perspective not open to pastors who have always been Lutheran. (The characteristic is very well shown in the author's book [The Great Divide] on the differences between Lutheran and Reformed theology). Secondly, Pastor Cooper is simply a gifted writer. His dissertation flows systemically and without either oversimplification or the assumption that the reader knows high level theological terms.
