This is a very good read about "ordinary people overcoming struggles resulting in extraordinary adventures" that you can live vicariously, and sometimes painfully, through the author's Tour Divide ~2800 mile mountain bike race along and crisscrossing the Continental Divide from Banff, Alberta to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. Full disclosure - I made a very similar ride a year later but not as a racer but rather an adventure ride in twice the cumulative time as Andy Amick. The author records the literal and figurative highs and lows of pushing himself to physical and emotional limits and beyond, while enjoying sublime moments in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and charm of the small towns he passes through. He also emphasizes with personal vignettes the kindness of the people he meets along the way that restore some semblance of a social life outside of his somewhat cloistered life with his fellow cyclists, competitors and newfound friends. A worthy read for anyone that enjoys cycling an/or pushing yourself to limits that you're not sure you can attain or survive. Strongly recommend.
An impressive ride. The daily distances blow my mind and it is hard to comprehend that the leaders are usually doing about 50 miles more per day. I was surprised that the author had never camped alone before doing this ride. The mt lion sighting was cool. I have had 5 encounters and almost all have been road crossings. Typically they will pause for one last look back at you which usually reinforces your own insignificance. The last one I had I was struggling up a long grade on my Fargo and something ran across infront of me. I stopped and looked down the embankment and there was what looked like a bobcat but something wasn't right. Then I saw its long tail twitch, it was a mt lion kitten and moma was almost certainly watching me closely. I immediately continued up the hill with renewed vigor. Such encounters are awe inspiring. Like an encounter with a rattler, they happen when least expected. There is more of a sense of don't do anything dumb than fear. The size of their paws always impresses me.I would have liked to have read more about water sources from Abiquiu south. And yes, Pie Town is the real hub of the universe. If you are at all interested in the divide route or bike packing read this book.
Have read several books about cross country tours to get pumped for my own first distance tour this summer. Andy's was my first book about the Divide. A bit more introspection than I prefer, but my helmet is off to anyone who can make this ride. Andy, if you should happen to read this and you're planning second printings, a couple of things served as flies in the ointment for me. (Retired English teacher.) "It's" is a contraction of "it is"; "its" is the possessive pronoun. And another frequent pronoun error, as in "From the moment she greeted Nic and I" should be "Nic and me." "I" is never used as a direct object.
This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I feel compelled to disclose that I played a small part in Andy's journey and consider him one of my closest friends. His book is very well written and edited (excellent work Kristi). Andy's wit and insight about life give his story a very relatable feel. You don't need to be a cyclist to share in his experiences and gain inspiration from his adventure. I found myself really liking they way he structured the book with chapters switching back and forth between his personal story/thoughts and the actual events of the race. It's an uplifting story that shows you can persevere through difficult situations and in then end, achieve your dream!
I really enjoyed this book. It provided an excellent overview of one persons journey on the Tour Divide ride. Both the internal and external struggles were brought out to the reader through colorful narration. Overall, it is a very easy read and Andy pulls you in from the very start to keep you reading page after page until the end. The book brought me into a world that was entirely new to me, one that I thoroughly enjoyed!(Full disclosure, I know Any personally, he's a really good guy!)
A good rider I suppose, but definitely not a good writer. If you're an avid reader who appreciates depth of conveyance and perhaps a sense of adventure, this book is not for you. In essence, it's a record of a long cruise in journal prose and, unfortunately, a real sense of his experience is lost to mundane details about logistics and food.
Well written cycling adventure.I enjoyed reading about the highs and lows of endurance racing and just trying to make it to the end.
Good read, you don’t have to be a mountain biker to enjoy this. It’s Banff to Mexico or bust for a family guy without his family....I’m an adult several times over, but this would be a good read for a teenage boy too ( G-rated)
