This book is highly interesting. I have never seen another book quite like this one. If there are others, I hope to find them, so please leave a comment. The paintings are dissected by use of informative graphics and diagrams, detailing the painting methods used and the chronology of construction. I wish I would have seen this book earlier on in my art career. It probably would have inspired me to experiment more with traditional methods of painting. I bought this book after watching several of Waldemar Januszczak art documentaries which were all genius, so of course I had to see what books he had either written or had been a part of the development. It would be a great teaching aid as well.
if you are a painter, this book will be of great value to you. it illustrates the processes by which great painters have achieved their work, and (if you are a painter, you know) painting is most definitely a laborious, choice-laden process, filled with false starts, courses changed, decisions accepted. this knowledge can be encouraging for beginning painters, and highly instructive for more advanced painters.if you are not a painter, but just a curious type, this book is a fascinating look into the history and creation of western painting, and you will come away with an increased respect for and greater understanding of those framed surfaces the world so admires.
I thought there would have been more explanation of their approach
I bought this book as I am new to oil painting and wanted to supplement my learning.The book covers a great variety of old masters. It includes photos and information about one painting per artist. Details of technique are presented with close up photos of parts of the painting.The print is quite small. The detail is interesting. It's good to own this type of book, rather than borrow from the library.

This book is simple and to the point. Its got some good examples and diagrams.
Arrived before expected. Product in perfect condition although description included tiny dents. IAt art school my professor had a copy that was thrashed. How amazing to see this in nearly pristine condition! Now I can trash it myself in the studio. Highly recommended seller.
