Upon retirement, my fifty-year old restart of obtaining an amateur license was assisted considerably by this brilliant book that filled in terminology and references that had changed drastically during those years. I consider this book to be the inspiration for my reactivated entry to the ham radio technology and licensing process. Along with ARRL's manuals, I took and passed exams for Technician, General and Extra amateur licenses in a period of 28 days from the time I received Ham Radio for Dummies. I would have struggled considerably without the knowledge gained from this excellent book.
The title fits. Having been an amateur radio operator for MANY years I was curious as to what approach this bookwas taking and what it had to say. It is a good book for the novice with no knowledge of ham radio and maybe evenfor the person who is thinking about getting into ham radio. For the individual who is seriously interested in finding out about amateur radio and even going after their license, I would heartily recommend searching out the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL.com) site and purchasing someof their books. You will get a lot more current and valuable information going directly to the source. For someone just reading about amateur radio, I would recommend this book.
I was licensed back in 1995 and used my radio for a few years, knew all the in's and outs. But then I went silent for about 10 years where I didn't use a radio, in fact didn't even have a ham radio. I feel so far behind the times in terms of knowledge. I finally after 10 years got a radio and antenna for my truck and hooked it up. I remembered the basics but then one day I heard on the local 2 meter repeaters a conversation between an Alaskan truck driver in Alaska and a guy down the road from me in Nashville. How is this possible I thought? Well it turns out repeaters can now be linked through the internet using a series of DTMF codes. The world of IRLP was new to me and I wanted to learn more so I started searching the web and found this book talked about it. I also found that the FCC changed the license restrictions and opened up new bands to my license level. I had no idea, I bought this book and read it cover to cover the day it arrived. It covered all the basics to get me back up to speed on what changed in the 10 years I was off the air and really is a great book for anyone needing that refresher, or for new Hams. I recommend getting this.
Although this is a good beginning .......I would recommend the regular Radio Operators License Manuals instead and simply do the course of study required. They are both about the same length in reading time.
Ward Silver's "Ham Radio for Dummies" is an informative guide for the new or prospective Amateur Radio operator. The book opens with a general introduction and overview of amateur radio, then proceeds to explain the subject in breadth and (sufficient) depth without overwhelming the novice with jargon and technical detail. The reader will quickly learn that "Ham radio" is much more than a hobby. In addition to promoting personal communication and friendship over long distances, amateur radio plays an important role in public safety (emergency communications, weather spotting), education and training, and even technical innovation in electronics, communications, and computing. Please note that "Ham Radio for Dummies" is not intended to prepare individuals for the FCC Technician Class license test, although there is much useful information in the book. Those preparing to take the Technician Class licensing test should consult a proper study guide: the most current version of the Ham Radio License Manual (Amateur Radio Relay League) and/or Technician Class (Gordon West).
A great intro to the overall topic. Coupled with the ARRL's "Ham Radio License Manual: All You Need to Become an Amateur Radio Operator," they're enough to make sure you successfully pass your written test. Both books are written by Ward Silver, and there's a fair amount of duplication between them--but that's a good thing. The ARRL books goes into the kind of detail you need to pass the exam, and the book also has the complete test question bank, with answers. If you're a self-study person, as I am, and don't want to bother with the drudgery and expense for a classroom course or an online course, these two books are all you need. The Dummies book is more general but also answered questions and issues that the ARRL book didn't.There's also no need to pay for CD courses or online test prep services. If you read the ARRL book and study the question set, you'll do just fine.I have one complaint about the book: It's choppy. It could have done with a better copy editor who might have sequenced the material differently and made it hang together better. I found myself making lots of margin notes to pages earlier or later in the book where there was a bit more detail about something that should have been put together in the first place. It could also have done with a better proof reader, but that seems to be the way of the world these days. Poor punctuation, "it's" instead of "its" and so forth.
I earned my Extra class license within one year of beginning the process. I own or have studied the classic ARRL library of amateur radio handbooks. But this Dummies edition says it all in ways that are easier to understand and that point the reader to additional, more detailed sources. I also purchased a second copy for my 15 year old grand son who is working on Eagle Scout and who will take a scouting class in amateur radio with his scout troop. Ham Radio for Dummies provides a medium for technical conversation between my grand son and me. If he remains interested, he will have my equipment and call sign for his own.
Not as good as the arrl manual. Save your money and get the arrl book instead. This does a bad job preparing you for the license exams.
