I hesitate to buy independent non-fiction ebooks, because I'm always concerned that I'll be able to find the same information online, and for free if I take the time time to piece the websites together. I'm all for paying people for their work, of course, but I can do that at no cost to myself most of the time. However, this book is has a very large quantity of well-investigated material that you won't be able to find in a nice, condensed package on someone's website. The source materials for this book are based mostly on transcribed interviews with people in the theatre management industry. It talks about modern marketing strategies like the importance of becoming a center for the entire community, branding, the pros and cons of having a restaurant in your theater, the pros and cons of buying or leasing space for your theater company, the need for theatres to be educational centers, the impact of parking on ticket sales, the pros and cons of volunteers, the crumbling traditional non-profit structure, the rise of interactive theatre, and the importance of creating an experience for your theater-going customers rather than merely creating a good show (which is hard enough in and of itself). The advice is a little dated at a few times, especially how social media is not mentioned as a powerful (and free) tool, but this is forgivable since we really do want to hear the voice of experience in this case. We want to hear from the people who've actually succeeded in the areas in which we aspire to, and unfortunately, the voice of experience is not necessarily be on the cutting edge. Here, the focus is on the grizzled theatre manager's brain as it looks on past experiences to make analyses, and then uses that information to look forward and conjecture about the future. Much of the advice is timeless, and well... heck, maybe direct mail vs. social media is better at bringing in the money than I give it credit for.If you're keeping a theater afloat or thinking about starting a brand new one, this book will be a big help. At $3.49 for the Kindle vs. print version, this book is well worth the investment for anyone interested in the subject.

Though well-written and researched, this is a book for those who run performing arts center and are involved in booking Boradway touring companies, or housing multiple arts groups - ballet, symphonies, opera. It needs to be renamed. It was a waste for me, working with a small community theater.

As books about performing arts administration go, this one wasn't bad. Webb consolidates a lot of good research regarding theater management. However, what was missing was synthesis of the many, many, anecdotes offered by theater managers across the country. Webb's "let them speak for themselves" sometimes left me hanging for a larger point. There are several chapters, however, which provide a decent overview and would be good inclusions in a course reader. The "Facility Development" and "Audience Development"chapters are particularly good for this purpose.

I bought this book a while back but did not read it until recently. It was surprisingly jam-packed full of very useful information that most of us don't learn in school or on the job. I liked hearing from people in the industry about specific things that have worked (or not) in real life. This is not a bunch of theory and management speak but real practical and pragmatic suggestions that you can use tomorrow at work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in the performing arts.

This is a textbook like book which presents an organized overview of all parts of running a theatre. The book is mostly for theatres going from the adolescent to mature stage. It talks about facility management and the different types of theatres, the various types of programs, and the positions and departments that it includes. Some of the topics covered wouldn't be an issue yet for someone just renting a space with their budding theatre company. However, its a definite read for someone looking to expand or run their own theatre in the future and it explains how it all works. It could also be a good read for someone looking to fill one of the various roles in a theatre in the future. It's the book you should read before you read other books on the topic so you'd know what to look for.

This was an insightful read. Interviews and advice from many of the top theater managers in the US. I am in the process of opening an independent theater in Brooklyn and the book definitely gave me good ideas and has lead me in a good direction for future research.

I plan on having every employee in my building read this book. I have found no other book that is actually insightful and informative about my sometimes lonely & always hard-fought profession - running a non-profit performing arts center. It was truly wonderful to hear other voices on the subject, especially those who are established leaders in the field. The author has provided invaluable information on doing just about everything my staff and I do on a day-to-day basis; we all think we're doing our best, but this book helped me see other ways of doing my job that might make time spent at work more efficient and (maybe, just maybe) less stressful. I highly recommend this book to anybody involved in operating a theater.
